An Inspector Calls, by J.B Priestly was first performed in 1945. The play was set in 1912 before the war; it centers around the wealthy Birling family, who are visited by Inspector Goole. This proves to be a horrifying experience for the Birling's as they learn that they have all played a part in the suicide of a young girl called Eva Smith.
J.B. Priestley's,An Inspector Calls, is a classic drama that plays convincingly now as it did in 1946 (when if featured both Alec Guinness and Ralph Richardson) partly because of its allegorical nature and partly because of its engaging dialogue and mysterious inspector. Set in an English industrial city, the action ensues when a respectable family is subject to an inquiry, routine... it seems, in connection with the death of a young girl. The family initially seeming engaging and close knit eventually is revealed to be cowardly and self-centered. How are each of these engaging humans implicated in the tragic suicide of Eva? And, who is this inspector?
