Synopsis

The Seven Year Itch, by George Axelrod, is a classic comedy which proves that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Richard Sherman has a wife of seven years, a young son, a demanding job, and all the day-to-day stress he can handle. Stuck at home working while his family enjoys a summer vacation, Richard is soon indulging in daydreaming flights of fancy and facing temptations from all angles, including a gorgeous young woman who literally drops into his life. Richard's journey to find himself is a wickedly funny dissection of one man's midlife crisis which remains as fresh today as when Marilyn Monroe famously starred in the movie version as the object of Richard's fantasies.

Director's Notes

New York, New York in the summer of '52 was a different place, a different world: buttoned-down men toiled through the heat at their white collar jobs as dutiful wives and children escaped to the beach or the mountains. But the wandering eye never ages: Richard Sherman's dance with adultery could just as well happen today. George Axelrod's play tells this story of one man's itch with humor, fantasy ... and more than a little truth. Themes? Love, lust, fidelity, infidelity, adultery, age, youth, marriage, freedom. The play's from the time of Eisenhower and the Korean war, but it sure seems it could've been written last week.

No, ther's no scene where The Girl stands over a blowing subway grate. Billy Wilder's wonderful 1955 film version, best known for that iconic Marilyn Monroe moment, opens up the play adding several scenes outside the apartment. Wilder's greatest frustration in making the movie was that, shackled by Hollywood censors, he couldn't show (or even infer) that Richard and The Girl consummate their, uh, relationship. But somehow he pulls off the stunt of making Tom Ewell seem guilty as sin for doing, well, nothing.
