Clemma

Clemma

Proposals is both a funny and bittersweet tale of one weekend in the country. This is a story of commitment, of love and death: how little time we have, how precious it should be. The story is Interwoven with half a dozen different love realtionships that beg the question: is love enough?

Synopsis

Clemma, the black housekeeper/narrator, recalls the last time the Hines family gathered at their retreat in the Poconos in the summer of 1953. The father is Burt Hines, a 55 year old recovering from a second heart attack. He awaits his ex-wife, whom he still loves. The daughter Josie just broke a wedding engagement, and wants to renew a relationship with the best friend, Ray. Clemma fears a visit from the husband who left her years ago. He walks in with one working eye, one working hand and a guilty conscience. A pretty-but-dumb young model is escorted by Ray, a young Miami Mafioso with a gift for malapropisms brings comic hilarity.

Director's Notes

What do you think is funny or sad? Humorous dialogue? Situational or physical comedy? Normal characters placed in odd situations? Odd characters in normal situations? Love misplaced or rejected? Pain, death and suffering? Well, this production should have a little bit of everything for you. remind you of real life? What do you think is funny or sad when you think of Neil Simon? You normally think of ODD COUPLE or RUMORS or one of his many other hilarious farces. You have a certain expectatio when you see the Neil Simon name on a flyer for a show. You expect to come and laugh and be entertained.

Now, along those lines, how many of you have even heard of this play, PROPOSALS? Not many I am sure. This is not your typical Simon farce. having said that, I doubt that I will change the audience expectation. And since expectation becomes the requirement in most cases, anything less than meeting that perception or expectation may not be viewed as a failure. And that failure probably would not be attributed to Neil Simon but rather to our production. In order to avoid that, I have decided that this production will meet the audience expectation in one way or another. Therefore, I actually have added something to the play. The lines are as written by Mr. Simon. But the perspective from which we have interpreted the script is with the audience expectation in mind. See if you can guess what we added to make that happen?

So, please join with us in a singular performance whre anything can happen. And I do mean join, since it is only through your own creative suspension of disbelief that live theatre can thrive and a Director can bring any production from page o stage (with the help of many talented actors and technical people). Enjoy!
